GTI Monthly Mission Brief
Are We Prepared?

In last month's GTI newsletter there was a quote from President Obama saying "The greatest threat to U.S. and global security is no longer a nuclear exchange between nations, but nuclear terrorism by violent extremists and nuclear proliferation to an increasing number of states".

And now an FBI official sees 100% likelihood of a WMD strike on the U.S. FBI Assistant Director Vahid Majidi states "There is going to be an attack using chemical, biological or radiological material." and "we have to have a very effective and integrated approach trying to fight the possibility" of an attack.

We continually ask more and more out of our soldiers, law enforcement personnel and first response elements and it is imperative that they are no longer just equipped, but trained to operate in CBRNE environments. The preparedness level of our nation to face these kinds of threats is no longer a need it is a must and as the diversity of these threats against our nation continues to grow and evolve, there is a need for more realistic training and training venues.

GTI's Joint Operations Center (JOC) is the only training site of its kind in North America and no other training venue has the magnitude or complexity of the JOC and with a replacement value of 1 billion dollars, the JOC provides real world training opportunities that cannot be addressed anywhere else.

Students Attend GTI's IED Awareness Course

GTI had the honor to work with agencies from Orange County, New York, to provide them with Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) Awareness training in New York. The four individual classes were held February 14-17, 2011. Participating agencies were from Orange County Sheriff's Office, United States Postal Inspection Service, Middletown PD, Newburgh PD, New Windsor PD, Cornwall PD, Port Jervis PD, Town of Chester PD, Town of Montgomery PD, Metropolitan Transit Authority PD, and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Law Enforcement Division.

GTI would like to thank Deputy Luke Pagnillo of the Orange County Sheriff's Office, who worked hard behind the scenes to get this training for the various agencies.

Protect Yourselves and Be Safe

Alec Sarrazolla
As a former police officer of ten years, I know the importance of training realistically and training often. Especially in these economic times, it is critical that you take responsibility for your own well-being, particularly when you find that your department's training budget is shrinking. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund statistics, officer fatalities had a dramatic increase in 2010 and as of March 7, 2011, total officer fatality rates are matching those of 2010. There has been an over 20 percent increase from 2010 to 2011 in the number of fatalities due to firearms.

As a Senior Training Coordinator with GTI since 2005, I believe it is my job to provide you with the best training available, to give you sensible options to attend our training, and to understand your needs before you show up for our classes. Currently we have 6 classes listed on the DHS State Sponsored Course Catalog. If your department has access to DHS funding, you can use those monies to pay for the tuition if approved. We also have the ability to deliver any of our classes in a mobile training team format, which can save your department time and expense in traveling. If there are any training needs in 2011 that I can help out with, please don't hesitate to contact me directly for a free proposal.

Be safe out there!

GTI Hosts CQB Training

On February 21-23, 2011, deputies from Pickens County Sheriff's Office and Lexington Police Department attended GTI's 3-day CQB course at GTI's facilities in Barnwell, South Carolina.

This course is designed around proven principles and tactics for close quarters battle. Emphasis is placed on initiative based "free flow" techniques that enhance success in operator's decisiveness and maneuverability. This course develops "problem solvers" using techniques that are proven in hostile situations and dispelling common misconceptions associated with close quarters battle.

Within three days students will receive maximum amounts of practical applications for conducting close quarters battle. Emphasis will be placed on single/multiple rooms, hallways, stairways and complex structure designs. During this course students will conduct daily force on force scenarios and have a graded live fire exercise at the conclusion of the training.

For more information on the Close Quarters Battle (CQB) course visit our website.

FBI: 100 Percent Chance of WMD Attack

February 14, 2011 Story by Ronald Kessler, Newsmax

The probability that the U.S. will be hit with a weapons of mass destruction attack at some point is 100 percent, Dr. Vahid Majidi, the FBI's assistant director in charge of the FBI's Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate, tells Newsmax.

Such an attack could be launched by foreign terrorists, lone wolves who are terrorists, or even by criminal elements, Majidi says. It would most likely employ chemical, biological, or radiological weapons rather than a nuclear device.
