SURVEILLANCE
During this 5 day course, students will learn the basic skills necessary to conduct surveillance in support of law enforcement and military operations. Surveillance skills are a necessary part of both law enforcement and military operations whether conducting narcotics investigations or investigating known or suspected terrorist personnel.
In this review of the purpose of surveillance, students will study the different types of surveillance – discreet or close surveillance. Students will also earn what it means to be “backing,”
what is a “checking drill” and what qualifications make a good surveillant.
Methods of surveillance will be reviewed:
- from foot surveillance
- technical surveillance
- phases of surveillance (beginning with the pick up and ending with housing the subject, operational environment )
- the role of inhabitants
- street configurations
- team preparations
- communications planning (human resources)
- communication methods (radios vs. hand and arm signals)
Students will participant in practical exercises utilizing each of the surveillance methods beginning with foot surveillance utilizing 2, 3 and 4 man surveillance teams and culminating with a combination surveillance using 2 – 6 vehicles. An end of course scenario will be conducted where the students will be able to utilize all of the techniques learned during the week.
The instructors for this course are experienced in surveillance and counter surveillance operations acquired while serving with USSOCOM and various law enforcement agencies.
