LEVEL 2 BREACHING: DOOR AND WINDOW EXPLOSIVE BREACHING 5 DAYS
Level 2: (5 days) This course will orient the student with the principles and application of explosives and explosive breaching techniques. It is designed to provide the student with the capabilities to effectively explosively breach doors, windows and commonly used locking mechanisms used in residential, business and industrial environments. The student is oriented to federal ATF and DOT regulations regarding the manufacturing, procurement, sale, handling, transportation, and use of explosives. The history and case law of explosives used as a breaching tool equips the breacher with knowledge of legal issues associated with explosive breaching. Safety to all persons proximal to the charge is paramount, thus safety is extensively taught. Safety covers blast pressure, blast pressure dynamics, blast effects, human overpressure susceptibility, auditory thresholds, and blast injuries. The safety portion instills the breacher with the extensive hazards and the potential of catastrophic effects if proper safety and tactical measures are not followed. Introduction to explosive components available, their characteristics and proper applications will prepare the breacher to be able to apply the “right tool for the job.” An in depth target analysis portion establishes the proper planning, assessment, and method of attack on a particular target. Target identification, material composition, and techniques of target defeat are also part of target analysis. The breacher will then be taught the concepts of charge construction and applications. The breacher will be required to build live charges that will later be used for demonstration or during the live fire exercise program. The tactical operations portion is the final course module. The breacher will be taught the tactics and command and control facets of a tactical breaching operation. This includes team organization, movement techniques, and internal communication. The breacher will then be required to exercise this new skill set in a tactical live fire environment. Students are continually assessed during the course and intensely tested to ensure that a thorough understanding has been achieved and retained. The course is hands on intensive and academically challenging. The successful student will have the knowledge and confidence to effectively conduct explosive breaching operations. He will be able to accurately assess the effects of an explosive breach and communicate them to the tactical commander so they can be assessed in the decision making process.
